Yellowstone Views!

Preserving the beauty and uniqueness of the land for public use, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a law on March 1, 1872 that made Yellowstone the world’s first national park. Ninety-six percent of Yellowstone is in the state of Wyoming. Three percent of the park is situated in Montana with only one percent in Idaho. Yellowstone National Park is a United Nation UNESCO Biosphere Reserve park and World Heritage area since 1978. Over two million people come to the park each year. The majority of visitors come in the summer. Only about 150,000 people see the park during the winter months. By distance in miles, the park is sixty-three miles north to south and fifty-four miles west to east. Yellowstone consists of 2.2 million acres. The land is over 3,400 square miles. Four-fifths of Yellowstone is covered in forest. The forests mostly consist of lodgepole pine. Five percent of the acreage is lakes, rivers, and streams. The remaining property acres are grassland. Yellowstone National Park is world famous for the volcanic geyser feature of Old Faithful and the Mammoth Hot Springs. Old Faithful erupts about twenty times daily. About half of the volcanic heated water geysers, springs, mud pots, and pools are in Yellowstone. The park has three hundred geysers, but over 10,000 different water thermal sites. Eagle Peak, at 11,360 feet in elevation, is the tallest summit in the park. There are five entrances to Yellowstone National Park. They are the East, North, Northeast, West, and South entrances. There are over three hundred miles of paved roads with another one hundred fifty miles unpaved. The park has almost a thousand miles of hiking trails. Nine museums and visitor centers distribute information to park visitors. The National Park Service has seven campgrounds with four hundred fifty sites. Park concessions have another 1,700 campsites. Three hundred eighty National Park Service employees work in Yellowstone year round. Another four hundred employees are hired as seasonal workers during the summer months. Private concession companies employ several thousand service employees. Wildlife is abundant in Yellowstone. Over 30,000 elk live in the park. Black bear, grizzly bear, eagle pairs, coyote, gray wolf, moose, bighorn sheep, badger, river otter, three hundred bird types, and eighteen fish species can all be found in the park. Over 2,000 bison live in a native herd. More people are injured by bison every year than by bear attacks.
